What are the major risks associated in trading US stocks/ETFs?

Market Volatility – The US market is subject to frequent fluctuations and volatility due to various factors such as economic indicators, geopolitical events, and investor sentiment. Rapid price movements can result in significant gains or losses in a short period, increasing the risk for investors/traders.

Regulatory & Political Risks – Changes in regulatory policies or major political events can impact market stability and investor confidence. Shifts in government regulations, trade policies, or tax laws may affect specific industries or sectors, leading to volatility and uncertainty in the market.

Currency Exchange Risks – Fluctuations in currency exchange rates between the US dollar and Australian dollar can impact investment returns. Currency fluctuations can erode returns or amplify gains, depending on the direction of the exchange rate movements.

Who/Where are my US securities held with?

Our clients' US stocks/ETFs are held under a custodian arrangement with Futu Clearing Inc., a U.S. broker-dealer and clearing firm regulated by the SEC and FINRA, and a fully owned subsidiary of our parent Futu Holdings (NASDAQ:FUTU). Futu Clearing Inc. is also a member of the SIPC, which provides insurance coverage on client funds and assets held with a broker-dealer.

Is there a minimum deposit requirement?

No. There is no minimum deposit requirement to open an account with moomoo.

Does moomoo help complete my W-8Ben form/W-8Ben-E form?

A W-8BEN form (individual) is a legally required document, in compliance with US tax regulations, for the ultimate beneficial owner of listed securities deriving income in the US. Non-US residents need to have completed a W-8BEN form to declare their tax residency to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to ensure the right amount of tax is withheld.

When you sign up and open an account with moomoo, your W-8BEN form will be automatically completed on your behalf at no additional cost.

For other entities (such as Australian companies or trust), a W-8BEN-E form will be used instead, which is a more complex form and our team may contact you for more information during your onboarding process. Visit www.irs.gov for more details or consult your local tax agent if required.
