$NIO Inc (NIO.US)$ $XPeng (XPEV.US)$ $Li Auto (LI.US)$ $Contemporary Amperex Technology (300750.SZ)$ As they scour the globe for the lithium, nickel and cobalt resources needed to keep China on top in the electric vehicle (EV) stakes, Chinese battery and EV makers are fretting about supply of another mineral closer to home - graphite.
Graphite, in both natural and synthetic forms, is used for the negative end of a lithium-ion battery, known as the anode. Around 70% of all graphite comes from China, and there are few viable alternatives for batteries.
Chinese producers have their work cut out keeping up with global demand for graphite, which has surged along with rapid growth in the battery market in recent years.
Consultancy Benchmark Mineral Intelligence (BMI) sees a roughly 20,000 tonne graphite deficit in 2022, versus a similar-sized surplus last year. About 20,000 tonnes of graphite is enough to make batteries for roughly 250,000 EVs, an industrial source said.
"Demand from clients such as $Tesla (TSLA.US)$ is growing rapidly while supply of raw materials has been extremely tight," the source said, adding that the recent power rationing on industry had exacerbated the situation.

$NIO Inc (NIO.US)$ NIO held its annual Nio Day on Saturday. The Chinese EV startup unveiled the ET5, starting at $51,450. It will have a base range of 341 miles, rising to as much as 620 miles, albeit on a very loose standard. The mid-size EV sedan is a potential competitor to the Tesla Model 3, the Xpeng P7 and P5 and the BYD Han. ET5 deliveries will begin in September 2022. Nio claimed record preorders, but gave no specifics.
Nio also will begin deliveries of the upscale ET7 sedan, unveiled at Nio Day 2020, on March 28, 2022. The Nio ET7 has a range of up to 620 miles by China's loose standard.
Nio says it'll be in 25 countries by 2025. Along with $XPeng (XPEV.US)$ and $BYD Company Limited (002594.SZ)$ , Nio has recently started selling some EVs in Norway, a launching pad throughout Europe.
Nio stock could use a lift, hitting a 13-month low intraday before closing higher. Xpeng stock and China EV and battery giant BYD is testing recent lows. But Nio and Xpeng fell modestly before the open.

$BYD COMPANY (01211.HK)$ BYD is adding significant EV capacity. The company recently said in an investor conference call that its 2022 NEV sales target is roughly 1.1-1.2 million units, with 600,000 EVs and 500,000-600,000 PHEVs. That's up from 600,000 in 2021. But the forecast seems conservative, given that flat sales from November's pace equal an annual run rate of 1.08 million NEV vehicles. BYD says it'll open three new factories, boosting capacity by another 500,000 vehicles by Q2 2022. All that suggests that BYD's electric and hybrid production could hit 1.5 million or more.

$Li Auto (LI.US)$Sales data: Li Auto once again broke a monthly delivery record in November. The China EV maker reported a total of 13,485 Li ONEs delivered last month. That represents a 190% year over year increase. Total deliveries for the year so far have reached 76,404. However, Li Auto stock has yet to show investors it can be consistently profitable.

At a recent media briefing at Goldman Sachs (GS.N), Wang Yajun, Co-Head of Equity Capital Markets for Goldman Sachs Asia (ex-Japan), said: "Hong Kong is one of the major global equity trading centers and has a large international investor and issuer base. There will be an increasing number of Chinese companies listing in H-share in the future, and the comeback of Chinese stocks will continue to be active. In terms of sectors, TMTand healthcare will lead the stocks in Chinese stock offerings.
