Back in 2019 I was new to trading, and opened my first stock account. Did minimal research and just dumped one lump sum into a bluechip. Got really lucky on one of my trades ( $HongkongLand USD (H78.SG)$ ), and managed to get 9% in a day. Seemed really easy money and I went ahead to just throw in money into stable companies (good cashflows + prospects etc).
My dad was very impressed and even gave me a sum of money to invest reminding me to be careful... however i was cery reckless and invested lumpsums at once.. then Covid struck and some of my investments ( $CHINA TAIPING (00966.HK)$ , $CHINA AOYUAN (03883.HK)$ , $CHINA LILANG (01234.HK)$ ) did not recover to their highs before covid. Still sitting at a loss of ~40% up till today. Had I learnt earlier, i would have DCA-ed into these investments and spend more on the dips.
I hope to be able to make it up to my dad one day. Thankfully I still have a rather long time horizon and more trades to practice. Very valuable lesson learnt. #My No.1 Trading Rule
ruinsaint : you will, just HODL.
Investphil : yes. just hold for good stock. they will climb back but be patient. I learn one thing, you can't time the stock market and you can't out smart. safest is buy into value stock and at least when they drop you feel at ease that they will rise again
Jesse99 : Dollar cost averaging
couldn't agree more!
HK_in_SG : Do consider another rule: invest in yourself (could be FA, TA, etc) before investing in financial markets. This is especially important when you have the advantage of longer time horizon (time in the market).
