When an ETF sponsor wants to reduce the number of ETF shares on the market, the AP will buy those ETF shares in the market and deliver them back to the sponsor in exchange for the same value in underlying securities.
They try to trade the amount of securities they want to get rid of for the amount they want to receive. MM’s handle what they can buy when there is a spillover they put those on the market for sell. They can also do this to trick investors into selling their shares for cheap if the MM knows that the stocks price will increase during market hours.
