Energy, consumer discretionary and technology shares weighed on the benchmark S&P 500. Growth favorites that led the recent rally such as $Amazon (AMZN.US)$ and $Alphabet-A (GOOGL.US)$ $Alphabet-C (GOOG.US)$ dropped from recent all-time highs, sending the $Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC.US)$ lower.

As of 4:01 p.m. New York time, $S&P 500 Index (.SPX.US)$ fell 0.3%. The $Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC.US)$ fell 0.7% and the $Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI.US)$ rose 0.2%.

Tech giants $Apple (AAPL.US)$, $Microsoft (MSFT.US)$, and $Amazon (AMZN.US)$ all fell slightly, no longer covering up deteriorating conditions among many leaders.

$Tesla (TSLA.US)$ CEO Elon Musk admitted Thursday the Cybertruck might flop but said he doesn't care because he loves its unusual trapezoid-like design. He also reminded fans about promised features such as four-wheel steering and the lack of door handles.

In addition to the trillion-dollar quartet, $Meta Platforms (FB.US)$ also dipped while big caps $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$ and $Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.US)$ — and many other chip stocks — fell solidly in the wake of so-so earnings from $Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM.US)$.

$AMC Entertainment (AMC.US)$ swung wildly on Thursday, extending a bout of volatility that has delivered deep cuts to small investors this week. Shares in AMC rose nearly 8%, erasing losses from earlier in the day, when it fell almost 6% in premarket trading.

In overnight trade, $Moderna (MRNA.US)$ jumped 8% on news that it will join the S&P 500 index.

$Netflix (NFLX.US)$ said Wednesday that it had hired former $Electronic Arts Inc (EA.US)$ and $Zynga (ZNGA.US)$ executive Mike Verdu as vice president of game development.
