OP
:
shorts is a position whereby the share is sold first then bought back later. example, sell now at $20 to hold a short position, and i bank on the share price will dip all the way to example $10, i buy the share back, closing out my short position. during that process, i earn a $10 margin.
SI% is how many shorts that have not covered yet. to short, you are essentially borrowing the share from your financial institutions so you have to cover this position sooner or later. and holding a short position incurs interest, and there is only so long that you can hold a short position, aka days to cover.

OP
:
in any case, you can short a stock all the way till the company bankrupts and not buy back the share. but then you have to weigh your incurred interest from share borrowing.
in AMC case, the large gathering of buyers, given they are not selling, and that short positions have to cover to reduce their losses, the retails trader that hodl and buy positions per usual, will only drive the price up
薛定谔的韭菜s : could you please explain what is SI%?
薛定谔的韭菜s 薛定谔的韭菜s : Short interest?
