With cards you're at least guaranteed a safe space where transactions funnel through a 3rd party vendor so any weirdness can (hopefully) be detected and stopped. In short, the concept and financial risks remain no different from having a credit card as it boils down to individual fiscal responsibility to spend within your means (no card or financial planning is gonna save a haphazard spender) but if utilised correctly provides opportunities for individuals to plan and execute spends in a way that provides better opportunity costs than otherwise limited to.
