Depends on your timeframe
For the long term hold (long term potential):
1) the company fundamentals is my number 1 consideration, I don't care much about
how the general market is doing. For example, after doing a lot of research/reading, I believe $PAVmed (PAVM.US)$ has huge long term value, so I decided to buy it (at the time it was not cheap, my average is about $6.
2) Having said #1, once I decide to buy a stock for long term hold, I will wait for a pullback, when the trend resumes, I buy.

For the short term trading:
I use technical analysis to place high probability trade. Having a tested, working system is the key.
I use $VIX/$VXV and some other indicators to help determine my trades. It is all about intraday momentum.
Here are the 2 trades I placed today.
Trade #1 $SPX 0 DTE put vertical (still ongoing)

Trade #2: MNQ emini future I placed this morning when the market has a nice dip.
I do believe one can be very successful at investing, no matter long term or short term, you have to develop your own approach.
