Relationship means emotional feelings are involved and that is a big nono for me in investment.
In fact the one big thing that I want to improve on in my investing is my emotional control which I found to be most lacking in my entire investment journey and which has costed me many painful lessons.
So to me, investing should be guided by numbers and trends, not relationships (emotions).

Investing is like a relationship and for myself, it is more like a long term one since I prefer a value investing approach. One does not have to be a legend like Warren Buffett to generate good returns with a value investing strategy. To be a successful value investor, I understand that investing is very different from speculation. My investment rule is to look for companies $Alibaba (BABA.US)$, $Apple (AAPL.US)$, $Microsoft (MSFT.US)$ that are trading at reasonable discounts to their true value today. As a value investor, I believe that over the long term, the stock price will generally match the underlying value of the company. In terms of investment time horizon, I would tend to think in terms of years rather than weeks or months as I understand that high quality companies may take time for its stock price to rise to something closer to its intrinsic value. Having the patience to wait until that happens is a closer step to success as a value investor. I keep myself informed about the company's financials through reading the company's annual report and paying attention to company news to ensure that I am familiar with the company and also to understand if its situation is changing which may affect its instrinsic value. If something happens that affect the true value of the company, I would need to reassess the reason for owning the stock.
