Opinion on Beginner Luck

I believe everyone had beginner luck, provided they don't close their trade very early and willing to withstand the ups and downs of their stock.

For instance, when I started back in early March 2020, I bought a put on $SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY.US)$ when the virus started but many place is not lock down yet. it went up and down, which I closed my position in loss as I am fear of the uncertainty. Now looking back, if I hold it to almost the end of the expiry date, I would easily 8-9x my principal if I stay firm with what I believe in.

During the same period of time, I also invested in $Tesla (TSLA.US)$ and $Bitcoin (BTC.CC)$, and I held and dollar cost average till today. There's many time I had the feeling of selling them but in the end I just ignored these feelings. As I know I need to believe in myself and do nothing unless my conviction has changed.

So do I have beginner luck? I will say yes but it depends on the how long your time horizon is. So don't penny wise pound fullish.

  • kat kukuuu : The more people involved, the greater the probability of long-term success if it is pure luck. Maybe you are the lucky person

  • Anson Liaw OP kat kukuuu : Looking at what I have. I won't really say I am lucky person ☺️. I dollar cost average (DCA) into TSLA and BTC near their ATH. Right after that it retraced for 30-50% for almost half a year 😂. Had I quit my position, I will be making losses.

There's also many a time once I sold all my holding in a stock, they skyrocketed.. I got exercised with AMC share after selling put @ $3 back in early 2020, and I held them till the end of 2020 and sold them in loss. One month later. AMC skyrocketed because of WSB and high short float percentage. Right now it is sitting at around $40.

So am I really lucky? I don't really know.

There are time I feel lucky short term and unlucky in long term. or vice versa. But I guess as long we focus on our wins and learn from our loses.. in the long run we can still be successful even we missed out a lot.
