  • HopeAlways :

  • HopeAlways : The difference between investing and gambling may not be as clear cut as it seems. Both involve risking money for potential financial gains. Unlike gambling which advocates taking a fast approach towards making money which often involves a higher level of risk, investing requires a slow and steady route to success, picking a well diversified portfolio of stocks from different sectors and regions to hold for the long term. To do so, investing requires researching different companies before making an informed decision based on actual financial data such as P/E ratio, P/S ratio and EPS. Investing regular amounts on a monthly basis and reinvesting dividends are also tried and tested methods of building wealth. While investing cannot ensure that we will never be wrong about a stock, the point, however, is that the decision to buy stocks is based solely on actual data and knowledge. That is why investing is a far cry from gambling, which is akin to throwing some money into a slot machine and hoping for the best.

  • 101767718 HopeAlways : Totally agree, investing and gambling are not the same. 👍

  • Jeet Kune Do HopeAlways : Good stuff

  • garay HopeAlways : If no sufficient analysis, risk management and proper sense in picking an investment vehicle, it would most likely be considered a gamble.

  • Dadacai : Yes and no. Deciding to invest is like taking a gamble in that one has to be prepared to lose the money. However, it can be a calculated gamble if one does thorough research beforehand and understand what one is investing in. Also, investments vary in terms of risk. There are capital guaranteed as well as low risk products if one is prepared to accept a lower return. One can also mitigate the chance of losses by choosing quality assets, formulating an exit strategy and having a diversified portfolio.

  • VCSuccess HopeAlways : Great sharing about investing. It is much more than gambling for sure.

  • Tuyea : Long term or short term... only time will prevail

  • Syuee : Certain kinds of investing, sure. Random day trading. Extreme aggressive use of options and futures with super high leverage. Things like that, really are pretty close to gambling.

Other forms of investing, long term buy and hold or, dividend based income strategies can be very safely managed. Certain bonds, can also be almost guaranteed.

So like most things in life the real answer is, it depends.

Investing involves risk, but gambling and speculation are typically seen as short-term activities. Investing is longer term. But despite assertions that “they are totally different,” there is no clear line between the two.

Investing is not gambling, if you gamble in the stock market then you are gambling. You are not investing.

Investing is doing your due diligence, having fundamental analysis on the company and investing in it because you believe in it.

Gambling is not knowing anything about the company or the price but buying because you feel like it.
