$Lucid Group(LCID.US)$ would be my best guess for who does it. They have the most efficient EV technology to date. They are also a company that I think Apple would trust with design.
$Ford Motor(F.US)$ would be another logical guess given they just hired Doug Field who previously led Apple's design.
But for me the elephant in the room is that $Apple(AAPL.US)$ is going to want all the profit for themselves and therefore no one is going to want to build a car for them. Apple's endeavors with autos reminds me of an episode of Seinfeld when Kramer and Newman try to start a rickshaw business: "Pace yourself because you are going to have to work long hours for very little pay."
What good self respecting auto company is going to want to work for Apple? Related to that question is another question: do we really think Apple has some moat over other chip makers? Even giving Apple the benefit of the doubt that they really did create breakthrough chip technology for self driving I find it hard to believe that in time somebody like Mobileye is not going to create something to rival it and they will give automakers a better deal.

  • wild horse : Apple could charge a subscription and slight profit from the actual car sale. I could see that working out for the auto producer. Could also give a cut of subscription.

  • Milenko wild horse: I think that is a deal breaker for just about all traditional automakers. At least right now. I know it is for Ford and GM. They want all the car sale and at least some of the subscriptions. They are willing to invest billions of their own money to get it.

  • T_shares Milenko: Is Tesla currently making any profit of any significance compared to Apple?

  • EEC6iRWd4p wild horse: Can Apple enter the electric car business? any time if you have the OS, CPU chip design ability and money, Should they? no Apple needs to put (disrupt) Microsoft, Dell and Amazon out of the server business. Which is something they can do easy.

  • TvhXCjkODq wild horse: I don't know if you are right, but you will have no argument from me. I have just been following the auto sector. I can't speak to what the opportunity cost is to Apple for putting their money into building vehicles as opposed to putting into the server business. But as you say, they are not investing in servers.

  • vYcu5FgULx : Really Apple should have been bold and created their own in house EV company about 7-8 years ago. Think about how Rawlinson quit Tesla sometime around 2013 or 14' just after he led the design of the Model S. Apple could have hired him to lead an Apple EV company. Today Apple could effectively have total ownership of what is now Lucid plus all the hi tech Apple could bring to a Lucid car. In other words, they would be making totally amazing vehicles that not even Tesla could compete with.
But everyone frowned on that (both wall street analysts and retail investors) because auto manufacturing was considered beneath Apple and it would hurt their profit margins in the short run. That gets to the lack of vision at Apple.

  • KHVgqUvpZS : From my perspective all I see is an obscenely huge cash pile while pursuing the automobile business by half measures.
