1 year performance isn't really the best indicator for long term performance. Broad index funds work great but nothing wrong with picking some individual stocks also. Amazon $Amazon(AMZN.US)$ , PayPal $PayPal(PYPL.US)$ , Disney $Disney(DIS.US)$ are some high quality names that underperformed the indexes. I wouldn't bet against those names for the upcoming years.
