Apple makes its own 5G modem chip
$Apple (AAPL.US)$ expects that in 2023, the new generation of iPhone will no longer rely on $Qualcomm (QCOM.US)$ Qualcomm's 5G modem chip (modem), and will begin to use its own designed chips. The semiconductor supply chain has recently reported that Apple's technology has been developed and will use TSMC's 5nm family process. With an annual production capacity of 120,000 pieces, it is expected to contribute to TSMC's operational growth momentum in 2023.
Apple's iPhone has always used Qualcomm's modem chips. Foreign investors have previously pointed out that Apple and Qualcomm have an agreement. Apple's iPhone launched in 2021 will use Qualcomm's Snapdragon X60 modem chip, and will be equipped with Snapdragon X65 modem chip in 2022. Qualcomm will be put into production at Samsung; but Apple Acquired Intel's mobile phone modem chip business in July 2019, and began to develop modem chips the following year to replace outsourcing from Qualcomm.
The semiconductor supply chain recently reported that Apple's 5G modem chip technology has been developed and will be produced using $Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM.US)$ TSMC's 5nm family's 4nm process, with an annual production capacity of 120,000 pieces, equivalent to 10,000 pieces per month, contributing to TSMC's 2023 operations Growth momentum is expected. TSMC said that during the silent period before the meeting, it did not respond to customer and supply chain rumors.
