Stepwise Investment Journey for the Long Haul

To improve my investing methods:
1. Roboadvisors
I started my investment journey last year using a few local roboadvisors while trying to learn about investments as I was too 'chicken' to try investing alone. The profits were small and I realize in the long run the management fees would eat into my returns. However, I had freed up more time to do my work and my studies (provided I do not panic and monitor it daily). Also, roboadvisors are much cheaper than investinin actively managed unit trusts found in banks, so thats another win right there. While i feel that roboadvisors are an excellent way to dollar cost average your investments, you should be aware of the management fees and expense ratios of the ETFs they have invested in. I am currently using both Syfe and Global Digiportfolio from DBS. If you are interested in signing up with Syfe you can use my promo code at SRPRGZ347.
But do read the terms and conditions first. You need to deposit 1000Sgd to qualify for 6 months of management fees waived for Assets Under Management of 30,000 sgd and below.
Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs)
Which brings me to my next chapter of my investment journey. Not contented with the management fees of roboadvisors, I decided to try my hand at ETFs. This is an excellent way to diversify your investments without risking of having to invest in single companies alone. For example the S&P 500 index consisting of US top 500 companies like Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet Inc. and have an annualized return of about 10% for the past 40 years. One of the ETFs tracking this index is the Vanguard S&P 500 index fund (VOO) which has one of the lowest expense ratio of 0.03%. This will be my main ETF to focus on as it is a core ETF found in many roboadvisors portfolio. Though i wish to also add on some ETFs that tracks the international market like Vanguard Total International Stocks (VXUS), which contains all international companies of all cap size outside of U.S. like Nestle, Samsung, Taiwan Semiconductors and ASML. By using VOO and VXUS, you essentially cover global investments at a very cheap rate
Single Stocks
Now, as we see a flow from the wide ranging roboadvisors, narrowing to a few ETFs, now we look at single stocks. There are many ways to pick single stocks to buy into, especially if you believe in the prospects of the company. Personally, I combine my knowledge of companies, along with the products I see them sold widely, and their ranking on ETFs that tracks the U.S. index, EAFE index, and Emerging markets index, and pick the top few companies that are leading these indexes. For example, Apple has the highest weightage in S&P500 index, Nestle has the highest weightage in Ishares Msci EAFE ETF, and it has my favorite milo drinks, and Taiwan Semiconductor has the highest weightage in the Emerging market index. This may be a convenient way to pick stocks but it is best to do your homework first. This is something I began to employ using Moomoo low cost trading fee and Syfe trade as well that allows fractional share. You can use my referral code at SRPRGZ347 to earn up to 60 dollar of coupon for buying any stocks when you deposit your first 1000 sgd and make a first trade!
Overall, what I have shared is my own personal investment journey thus far. It may not be the best but it suits me well and I believe it is prudent. Disclaimer: This is not financial advise, and I am not a financial advisor. Take care and invest safe Moomooers!
