For comparison, Chen took Sybase from a near-death $362 million to a $5.8 billion company, i.e 16x after a 13 years turnaround. He’s been at it for BB for 8 years.

During an interview when Chen first became BB CEO, he recalled his strategy: ”I thought, wouldn’t it be great if we could exploit what we know and then skip a generation and go ahead of our competitors and become more relevant,”

BB has been doing exactly that. Chen is getting BB to skate to where the pluck will be. It could look stupid for a while skating to no-man’s land. But once the pluck gets there, you score.

In FY2022 Q2 Earnings call, “We now have design wins with 24 of the world's Top 25 electric vehicle automakers, as measured by volume … These 24 OEMs , between them represent 82% of global EV production.”

In 2021, worldwide EV production is 6.6 million, up from 3 million in 2020 and 2.2 million in 2019. In 3 years, EV production would easily exceed 20 million given every automaker is accelerating they EV plans. The pluck is getting to where BB is now.

The next big news will be: BB announces a partnership with Tencent Cloud or Alibaba Cloud to host IVY in China. Chen and Matthias Ericsson mentioned many times that IVY on AWS is not exclusive. China is into autonomous vehicles big time.

Further, from a 2016 McKinsey report: “Monetizing car data New service business opportunities to create new customer benefits”:
