My role models in investing
Two women have been more influential towards my outlook on investing than any super power investors I know: one is my mother, the other my mentor.
We were a big family of 7 living on my dad’s sole income as a teacher in Malaysia. It was enough for daily needs but certainly a stretch if we wanted to fulfill dreams.
My mom was a homemaker. Once we were all in school, she began going to the stock market everyday and learned how to invest.
My dad trusted her with our savings; seriously, it could go either way. We could end up losing lots of money!
But mom was a prudent and maybe, a lil shrewd investor. She helped my dad put all four of us through university here in SG. Now, we’re well accomplished professionals with good quality of life. Couldn’t have done it without mom’s savvy investments.
The second person is a good friend and mentor. She’s been investing well over the years so that when her son went to study in Tokyo, she was able to liquidate her investments and invested in an apartment near his university in the Shinjuku area.
Property in Tokyo is about the same as private property in SG - the only catch is everything must be paid in cash (no CPF). As someone who tinkers with the idea of retiring in Japan or elsewhere overseas, I will need a solid investment fund to support my future needs.
We don’t have to look very far to find role models, they are usually the people closest to us I share a picture of my mom and baby me … on one IWD years ago, my mom went into labor for more than 24 hours bc I had refused to come out on 三八妇女节 Thanks, mom, for your patience with me during my birth and the many years after.
