Russia Extends Equity Market Closure Until Mid March. But Promises to Pump 10 Billion into the Markets When They Reopen

The Central Bank of Russia extended the suspension of stock trading at the Moscow Exchange until March 18, with limited exceptions. MOEX trading will have been shut for three straight weeks, the longest in the country’s modern history, as authorities prevent Russian assets from sustaining sharp losses amid a series of harsh Western sanctions imposed against Moscow for the invasion of Ukraine. The MOEX has also been suspended from the World Federation of Exchanges, the main global trade association for bourses. Since MOEX last opened more than two weeks ago, Russian stocks and related ETFs listed at the London and New York exchanges dropped precipitously before trading their shares was suspended, while global index providers removed Russian equities from widely-tracked indexes. Meanwhile, Russia has promised to prop up the equity market with up to $10 billion when it reopens.
