Australia's $S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ closed 0.3% higher at 7479.0 amid gains for energy companies.

The materials and energy sectors were the day's strongest sectors, closing up 0.6% and 1.0%, respectively. $Paladin Energy Ltd (PDN.AU)$ was one of the standout stocks, closing 9.6% higher, while $Whitehaven Coal Ltd (WHC.AU)$ finished up 3.2% and $Santos Ltd (STO.AU)$ rose 1.3%. $Iluka Resources Ltd (ILU.AU)$ rose 0.9% after it said it intends to demerge its Sierra Leone mineral sands business this year.

In the financials sector, $National Australia Bank Ltd (NAB.AU)$, $Westpac Banking Corp (WBC.AU)$ and $ANZ Group Holdings Ltd (ANZ.AU)$ were up 0.4%, 0.6% and 0.3%, respectively, while Australia's largest lender $CommBank (CBA.AU)$ finished 0.2% lower.
