Kids and Money

We taught our kids using the 80/20 rule. When they were small it was 50/50.
Always pay yourself a MINIMUM of 20% of every dollar earned directly into a savings account that you don't touch.
As small children we started with 70% to savings (birthday/Christmas money) and gradually changed to 50/50 when they were teens then 80/20 Senior year of High School and into college.
We went over their bank statements with them monthly and taught them about credit. As college students we gave them a credit card on our account and had them open a revolving card in their own names.
Schools in the US don't teach enough about personal finance. Kids learn algebra but not how to do their taxes.
All 3 of our kids had jobs in High school. They were required to save - paying themselves first - with the added caveat that the savings account was untouchable.
We had college savings accounts invested in mutual funds that we reviewed with them (UGMA's) so they understood the stock market and investing/saving strategies.
Knowledge is POWER.
Money is also power.
Knowledge of finances and investments provides my kids with a very strong rung on the power ladder.
Talk to your kids about money early on. It used to be off-limits, but that's just nuts.
Our kids are also privy to OUR finances. If anything happens to us they know where the money is and how to access it. They see first hand the way we benefitted from early saving and consistent investments.
Not every family is as open as ours, I get that. Just find a level of sharing and go with what works for YOU. As long as your kids know they can talk to you, that's half the battle.
