Is this Audi's marketing strategy? Feels like something is off.
$NIO Inc (NIO.US)$ On June 16th, according to reports, Audi, a subsidiary of Volkswagen, filed a lawsuit against Nio Inc in Munich court, accusing Nio Inc of infringing Audi's trademark.
Audi stated that Nio Inc's decision to name its two models ES6 and ES8 infringed on the trademarks of Audi's two models, S6 and S8. An Audi spokesperson confirmed this lawsuit, while a Nio Inc spokesperson stated that they would not comment on ongoing litigation.
It is reported that currently Audi's S6 and S8 models do not have corresponding ES6 and ES8 versions, only RS6 and RS8, making it difficult to associate them with Nio Inc's models.
The Nio Inc ES8 model was launched in December 2017, and the ES6 was released in 2018. Both cars have been on sale for more than four years now, with sales of over one hundred thousand units. It is indeed surprising that Audi is now protesting against the infringement of the car names.
