The share market ground out a second-straight monthly advance, outperforming global peers during a generally supportive domestic earnings season.
The $S&P/ASX 200(.XJO.AU$ fought an uphill battle this session, paring an opening fall of 61 points to just 11.5 points or 0.16 per cent by the close. That was enough to hand the index a gain of 42 points or 0.6 per cent for August.
Tech and banking stocks did the heavy lifting this session, partly offsetting pressure on commodity stocks. $Webjet Ltd(WEB.AU$, $Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals Ltd(CUV.AU$ and $Atlas Arteria Ltd(ALX.AU$ rallied after reporting earnings.
The prospect of a record first-half distribution lifted toll road operator Atlas Arteria 0.38 per cent. First-half net profit more than doubled to $117.1 million as Covid restrictions were lifted. Security holders will receive 20 cents per security for each half.
A rebound in bookings and a bullish outlook boosted Webjet 8.02 per cent. Managing Director John Guscic told today's AGM WebBeds bookings had exceeded pre-pandemic levels since May. All businesses had been profitable this fiscal year. The group expected to surpass pre-pandemic underlying earnings in FY24.
Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals surged 16.19 per cent following yesterday's trading update. The biopharma reported a full-year net profit after tax of $20.9 million.
$Woodside Energy Group Ltd(WDS.AU$ led a sharp retreat in energy stocks, falling 4.52 per cent from yesterday's three-year high. $Santos Ltd(STO.AU$ declined 1 per cent. $Beach Energy Ltd(BPT.AU$ shed 2.01 per cent.
