AU Morning Wrap: ASX to fall; Retail investors hunt lithium stocks
Wall Street Summary
US stocks fell in choppy action as traders mulled mixed economic data and dire warnings of a global economic slowdown.

The $S&P 500 Index (.SPX.US)$ fell away in afternoon trade to a loss of 45 points or 1.13 per cent. The index closed at 3,901, its weakest finish since mid-July.

The $Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI.US)$ lost 173 points or 0.56 per cent. The $Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC.US)$ shed 167 points or 1.43 per cent.

The World Bank warned this year's scramble to raise interest rates to dampen inflation risked driving the global economy into recession. Consumer confidence has dropped more sharply than any of the run-ups to previous global recessions.

AU Market Watch
Australia's S&P/ASX 200 looks set to fall after U.S. stocks lost ground amid anticipation that the Federal Reserve will continue hiking rates sharply in the wake of this week's inflation report. ASX futures are down 0.7%.

Australian shares opened lower this morning. The $S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ lost 0.69 per cent to 6795.9 as of 10:19 am.
