The high cost of global airfares will continue in the short to medium term, and it may be a year or two before they return to pre-epidemic levels
Airfares to and from Singapore and Japan rose sharply in response to Japan's announcement last week that it was relaxing border controls and passenger numbers, joining the ranks of high airfares everywhere. Analysts interviewed believe that the subsequent re-opening of more Asian countries and regions will further release pent-up travel demand and keep airfares high.
Analysts expect the high cost of global airfares to continue in the short to medium term. It could be a year or two before they return to pre-epidemic levels, with the only way for consumers to get relatively "cheaper" airfares is to book in advance and avoid peak times.
In addition, the Japanese yen's exchange rate has plummeted by 20%, so it's no surprise that Japan is on the hot list of places to visit.
Besides, an increasing number of countries and territories are beginning to reopen their borders, and demand for travel to these locations will likely remain high for some time.
With the upcoming year-end holidays, demand is expected to be even stronger by then, which will further exacerbate travel inflation and airfares are expected to struggle to return to normal in the near term.
