KDDI has signed an agreement with Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) regarding the provision of satellite broadband internet “Starlink (Starlink)” to domestic corporate enterprises and local governments. It is an agreement following the use of au base stations for backhaul lines contracted in 2021/9, and both aim to start providing them within 2022.
Starlink's communication satellites are placed in low orbit at an altitude of 550 km, and the distance from the surface of the earth is about 1/65 lower than conventional geostationary orbit satellites, and significant low latency and high-speed transmission have been achieved. Overseas services began in 2020, and marine services have also been provided since the summer of 2022.
Under this agreement, KDDI will provide Starlink as an “certified Starlink integrator” to corporate enterprises and local governments that require stable and highly reliable communication in mountainous areas, island regions, natural disasters, etc., where construction of communication environments has been an issue until now.
