Vote Now | How much do you tip in 2022? Still leave 20%?
When the tablet swivels around at the coffee shop, are you leaving a 20% tip?
Maybe you were in late 2020 and early 2021, but now the US inflation is running at a 40-year high, with consumer prices soaring by 9.1% compared to the previous year. Fewer people are now tipping the standard amount.
A survey from Popmenu, a restaurant customer service company, found a decline in the percentage of consumers who say they tip 20% or more in restaurants — from 56% in 2021 to 43% this year.
The tipping boom and the tipping recession
Early in the pandemic, almost 73% of adults in the U.S. reported that they had done or planned to do something to support struggling small businesses, according to a survey from 2020. Many people tried to make up for service employees' loss in revenue as well as the health risks they were forced to endure, unlike white-collar employees, who were more often working at home.
A couple of years into the pandemic, inflation appears to be playing a role. A survey from PlayUSA found that 17% of Americans are tipping less because of inflation, but 10% report tipping more. At the same time, 60% of Americans said they would like to do away with tipping altogether.
"Now, people are not feeling like the're in savior mode all the time" anymore, Popmenu CEO Brendan Sweeney said.
Mooers, how much of a tip do you leave recently? What's your tipping etiquette? Are Americans reaching a tipping point when it comes to tipping?

一株冲天 : their job is to serve, the employer job is to pay the employees, and the customers duty is just to pay for the price quoted on the menu plus any taxes. Any tips should be a bonus for good services.
