The $S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ climbed 24 points or 0.33 per cent to 7325.6. The rally brought the index within 120 points of where it began the year.
Miners and energy producers led the advance following gains in iron ore, copper and crude oil. Utilities, healthcare providers and industrials kept a lid on gains.
Miners and energy producers provided most of the day's momentum. $Fortescue Ltd (FMG.AU)$ flew up 6.86 per cent to its highest since June. $Rio Tinto Ltd (RIO.AU)$ put on 3.74 per cent.
$BHP Group Ltd (BHP.AU)$ gained 2.29 per cent after filing a defence against a class action in the English High Court relating to the collapse of a dam in Brazil in 2015. The miner will defend the case, which it said duplicated proceedings already underway in Brazil.
$South32 Ltd (S32.AU)$ added 3.58 per cent, $Sandfire Resources Ltd (SFR.AU)$ 3.24 per cent and $Ramelius Resources Ltd (RMS.AU)$ 3.03 per cent.
Energy producers logged solid gains after the OPEC+ oil cartel decided overnight to maintain production. $Santos Ltd (STO.AU)$ tacked on 2.66 per cent. $Woodside Energy Group Ltd (WDS.AU)$ improved 1.96 per cent.
$Mayne Pharma Group Ltd (MYX.AU)$ dropped 12.5 per cent after paying $206 million to license women's health products and prenatal vitamins in the US.
