Shares posted their second straight day of losses after Australian economic growth came in below the market's expectations for the September quarter at 5.9 per cent annually.

On Wednesday, the benchmark $S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ Index dropped 0.85 per cent, or 61.9 points, to 7229.4 points for its lowest close since November 28.

The session's best performers were coal miner $Coronado Global Resources Inc (CRN.AU)$ +3 per cent, ore miner $Champion Iron Ltd (CIA.AU)$ +2.75 per cent, health insurer $NIB Holdings Ltd (NHF.AU)$ +2.41 per cent and public transport provider $Kelsian Group Ltd (KLS.AU)$ +2.41 per cent.

$Fortescue Ltd (FMG.AU)$ put on 2.27 per cent. $BHP Group Ltd (BHP.AU)$ inched up 0.09 per cent. $Rio Tinto Ltd (RIO.AU)$ faded 0.48 per cent.

$Beach Energy Ltd (BPT.AU)$ slumped 9.89 per cent as the battle for control of $Warrego Energy Ltd (WGO.AU)$ took another twist. $Strike Energy Ltd (STX.AU)$ announced it had increased its stake in Warrego to 19.9 per cent using share swap agreements.

Warrego shares eased 3.17 per cent. Strike gained 7.35 per cent.

$Santos Ltd (STO.AU)$ dropped 1.01 per cent in a tough market for energy producers after announcing it will double the size of a share buyback.
