Australian shares closed at a two-and-a-half week low amid a slowdown in consumer spending and as recession worries mounted in the US.
The $S&P/ASX 200(.XJO.AU$ dropped 54 points or 0.75 per cent to 7175.5. The Australian benchmark has fallen for four of the last five sessions since last week's seven-month high.
Today's decline extended the index's loss for the week to 125 points or around 1.7 per cent.
The increasingly defensive tone of recent action was underlined by gains today in gold miners, utilities, property stocks and supermarkets. Companies more strongly linked to economic performance – energy producers, banks and industrials – declined.
Gold heavyweight $Newcrest Mining Ltd(NCM.AU$ climbed 2.02 per cent to a five-month high after the yellow metal rose for a second night. West African Resources gained 4.65 per cent, Silver Lake Resources 3.88 per cent and Ramelius 3.68 per cent.
Among utilities, $AGL Energy Ltd(AGL.AU$ rallied 0.99 per cent, $Origin Energy Ltd(ORG.AU$ 1.29 per cent and $APA Group(APA.AU$ 0.28 per cent. Supermarket $Woolworths Group Ltd(WOW.AU$ put on 0.67 per cent.
Engineering group $Downer EDI Ltd(DOW.AU$ plunged 20.42 per cent after a challenging first quarter and the discovery of misreported revenues prompted a profit downgrade.
$Link Administration Holdings Ltd(LNK.AU$ dropped 1.48 per cent after ending discussions with Canadian suitor $Dye & Durham Ltd(DND.CA$ regarding Link's corporate markets business.
