AU Evening Wrap: Australia Shares Close 0.45% Lower on Coal, Gas Worries

The share market fell to its lowest in almost three weeks ahead of a likely wave of interest rate hikes overseas this week.
With central banks preparing to meet in the US, Europe and UK, the $S&P/ASX 200(.XJO.AU)$ fell 32 points or 0.45 per cent.
The Australian benchmark traded as low as 7156.5 before paring its loss to 7181. Today's decline was the index's fifth in seven sessions.
Energy utilities $Origin Energy Ltd(ORG.AU)$ and $AGL Energy Ltd(AGL.AU)$ led the retreat as the government pressed on with plans to impose price caps on gas and coal. Miners, supermarkets and healthcare providers also declined. Energy producers and property stocks rebounded.
Energy producers rebounded as crude rallied from a near 12-month low as a key US pipeline remained closed. Brent crude bounced 43 US cents or 0.57 per cent this afternoon to US$76.53 a barrel.
$Woodside Energy Group Ltd(WDS.AU)$ firmed 2.69 per cent. $Santos Ltd(STO.AU)$ gained 0.71 per cent.
Lithium miner $Sayona Mining Ltd(SYA.AU)$ rallied 2.33 per cent after securing the final permit to resume spodumene production at a joint venture in Quebec next quarter.
Aside from Woodside, the day's best returns came from $BrainChip Holdings Ltd(BRN.AU)$ +9.38 per cent, $Megaport Ltd(MP1.AU)$ +4.02 per cent and $Smartgroup Corporation Ltd(SIQ.AU)$ +2.55 per cent.
