my professional broker had me stay in the market in 2008 while his recommended portfolio sank to under 40% of its retirement value. I was paying him 1 and 1/2 percent of my portfolio value a year for this highly professional advice. Fisher Investments. I fired them and chose Edward Jones. There I "only" paid 1% of my portfolio value a year for their professional advice. I watched my portfolio sit stagnant while many stocks rose to amazing heights. I fired them too and chose Motley Fool. In one year my portfolio value had doubled. in November of 2021 I asked myself if I expected the market to continue to increase or was a decrease likely in the next 12 months. The answer was obvious. A decrease was more likely. I sold all stocks and by doing so avoided a $400,000 portfolio loss. I now have dividend stocks and don't really care what the market does but timing the market is what got me here.
