The share market pared four days of gains following a mixed night on Wall Street as investors took some money off the table ahead of risk events later this week.
The $S&P/ASX 200(.XJO.AU$ slid 20 points or 0.28 per cent to its first loss since the opening session of 2023. Today's setback dented a rally that had lifted the Australian benchmark roughly 1.6 per cent for the year by yesterday's close.
A trendless session today saw some banks and miners rise, while others fell. Gold miners and industrials were among the biggest drags.
Defensive assets were back in favour, bucking this year's shift towards growth. $Boral Ltd(BLD.AU$ added 2.65 per cent, $Aristocrat Leisure Ltd(ALL.AU$ 2.2 per cent and $The Lottery Corp Ltd(TLC.AU$ 1.94 per cent. $CAR Group Ltd(CAR.AU$ tacked on 1.92 per cent, $Domain Holdings Australia Ltd(DHG.AU$ 1.83 per cent and $Domino's Pizza Enterprises Ltd(DMP.AU$ 1.34 per cent.
Healthcare companies also featured near the top. $ResMed Inc(RMD.AU$ gained 1.7 per cent. $Nanosonics Ltd(NAN.AU$ put on 1.37 per cent. $Healius Ltd(HLS.AU$ added 1.29 per cent.
$Whitehaven Coal Ltd(WHC.AU$ gave up 1.2 per cent. $Coronado Global Resources Inc(CRN.AU$ shed 1.44 per cent. $New Hope Corp Ltd(NHC.AU$ lost 0.48 per cent.
