AU Morning Wrap: ASX Inches Up, Telix and Allkem Rally
Wall Street Summary
US stocks mostly declined as earnings dictated direction on the major indices following the Martin Luther King Jr public holiday. A mixed batch of bank earnings wrapped up with a well-received update from Morgan Stanley and a big miss from Goldman Sachs.
The $S&P 500 Index(.SPX.US)$ traded both sides of break-even before finishing eight points or 0.2 per cent lower. The $Dow Jones Industrial Average(.DJI.US)$ shed 392 points or 1.14 per cent. The $Nasdaq Composite Index(.IXIC.US)$ advanced 16 points or 0.14 per cent.
A 6.45 per cent plunge in $Goldman Sachs(GS.US)$ accounted for roughly half the Dow's decline. The bank slumped as its Q4 profit more than halved from a year earlier and earnings fell significantly short of analysts’ expectations. The bank warned it was seeing "early signs of consumer credit deterioration" as clients struggled with rising interest rates and higher prices.
