We have been using AI all along and it will dominate our lives
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has hit the tipping point thanks to ChatGPT.
But AI is not a new thing. We have been using it all along just that we didn't pay attention to it.
Here are some examples of AI applications in our lives:
1. Using our face to unlock our smartphones
2. Talking to Siri, Google Assistant and Alexa
3. Navigating with Google Maps
4. Searching on Google
5. Having spam mails removed from our inbox
6. Receiving product recommendations on e-commerce platforms
7. Netflix recommending shows to watch
8. TikTok suggesting one video after another to keep us hooked
9. Robot waiters serving food in Haidilao
10. Robot vacuum cleaners running around in our homes
AI is so integrated in our lives that it is impossible to list everything down.
There will definitely be more breakthroughs in the AI field in the future and it will have a profound impact to our society.
I don't think it will be as dystopian as what most of the movies have depicted, even though our lives will change dramatically.
Creative destruction is a repeated theme - The night soil collector became obsolete while plumber became the new role.
The lamp lighter was out of job but the electrician came to the fore.
AI will take away some jobs but new roles will be created - 'AI teachers' will be needed - get training data to train the AI; teach AI about human ethics; and teach others how to use AI are some examples.
In the near term, we can also think about how AI can enhance our market value.
Just like word processors were more efficient than typewriters, those who knew how to use Microsoft Office programs in the early days possessed a valuable skill.
But knowing how to use Microsoft Office is a given in today's world and it serves no value in the resume.
What if you become an expert ChatGPT user? You are able to ask the right questions and get relevant information - wouldn't that speed up your research.
What if you know how to leverage on ChatGPT to analyze data and generate reports quickly, wouldn't that make you more efficient at work.
Resisting AI isn't going to make it go away. It is the future and we have to keep abreast of the development and make ourselves relevant.
