On February 21, EST, $Arbe Robotics (ARBE.US)$, a global 4D imaging millimeter wave radar provider, surged over 70%^ intraday, and by the end of the day, the stock price rose 47.13%^, nearly doubling its share price in 3 trading days.
Arbe Robotics up 47%^! How Tesla drove the 4D radar company's stock price up?
Tesla recently submitted a vehicle change application to European regulators, confirming that the latest self-driving hardware HW4.0 will soon be on board for mass production. According to industry information, HW4.0‘s performance is estimated to be about 2 to 4 times that of HW3.0, with the biggest change being the addition of 4D millimeter wave radar. This news has stimulated a big jump in global 4D millimeter wave radar leader   $Arbe Robotics (ARBE.US)$.
Millimeter wave radar is the current mainstream automotive ADAS solution, with the advantages of low impact by the environment and long detection distance. Combined with its cost advantage, technology maturity, simple algorithm, good stability and other characteristics.
The current millimeter wave radar industry chain is divided into three major segments.
1. Upstream mainly includes RF front-end MMIC chip, digital signal processor DSP, antenna high-frequency PCB and control circuit, etc., involving manufacturers such as $INFINEON TECHNOLOG (IFNNY.US)$, $Texas Instruments (TXN.US)$, $STMicroelectronics (STM.US)$, etc.
2. The midstream is mainly engaged in the production of millimeter wave radar companies.
3. Downstream is mainly used in drones, Telematics, ADAS, and other fields, such as traditional car companies $BYD Company ADR (BYDDY.US)$, $Volvo AB Unsponsored ADR Class B (VLVLY.US)$, $General Motors (GM.US)$, New Energy Vehicle Companies $NIO Inc (NIO.US)$, $XPeng (XPEV.US)$, $Li Auto (LI.US)$, and $Baidu (BIDU.US)$ in the field of Telematics, etc.
The 4D millimeter wave radar has better performance, compared to the camera, and Tesla previously abandoned the use of 3D millimeter wave radar, it can more effectively support a higher level of intelligent driving, and the price is about 1,500 to 2,000 yuan, much lower than LIDAR in the short term.
So, is it possible for 4D millimeter-wave radar to replace lidar?
The cost of 4D millimeter wave radar is similar to that of traditional millimeter wave radar, but the performance is comparable to that of low-beam lidar, which is more in line with the current demand for mass production.
China's passenger car market front-mounted 4D millimeter wave radar will exceed one million units in 2023, and 4D imaging radar is expected to account for more than 40% of all forward-facing millimeter-wave radar by 2025, while the global millimeter wave radar market size will reach 38.4 billion yuan by 2025, with a CAGR of 25.5%
Tesla regained the radar program shows that the current pure vision program is still difficult to meet the demand for safety redundancy, multi-sensor fusion is still the future trend, as the penetration rate of higher-order ADAS continues to rise, LIDAR, 4D imaging radar, and other sensor markets will maintain high growth in the future.
