Apple blocks update of ChatGPT email app over content fears
$Apple (AAPL.US)$jumped into the ChatGPT arena Thursday, but not in the same way as some of its other big-name tech brethren. Apple doesn’t realize that Ai is the next big thing? The world's most valuable company has reportedly blocked an update to the BlueMail email app on its AppStore due to concerns that its artificial intelligence technology could deliver inappropriate content to children. The BlueMail app uses a customized version of the ChatGPT language model called GPT-3.
BlueMail is an email and communications app for busineses that has been developed by software company Blix. Company co-founder Ben Volach told the Wall Street Journal that AAPL notified his company last weekabout the decision to block the BlueMail app update. According to the Journal, Apple's review team told Blix that BlueMail should change its age-restriction level to 17 and older because the app could deliver content that isn't appropriate for children. AAPL used the 17-and-older restriction for apps that is deems to include content related to topics such as sexual matters, drugs and offensive language. BlueMail currently has an age restriction set at 4 and older. Blix's Volach told the Journal that AAPL asking his company to raise the age limit on BlueMail is unfair, and claims that the App Store carries other AI apps that don't come with age restrictions. OpenAI's ChatGPT technology has claimed the lion's share of the AI market attention of late, due in large part to$Microsoft (MSFT.US)$making what it called an "multi-year, multi-billion-dollar" investment in OpenAI in January. In February, MSFT began rolling out ChatGPT technology for use in desktop systems, as well as its Bing search engine and Edge browser for use in Apple iOS and$Alphabet-C (GOOG.US)$Android mobile devices.
