Microsoft didn't actually buy chat GPT. They announced a new multiyear, multibillion-dollar investment with ChatGPT-maker OpenAI back in January 2023.
OpenAI was co-founded in 2015 by Elon Musk and Sam Altman and is backed by well-known investors — most notably Microsoft.
