AU Morning Wrap: ASX Falls 1.3%; Atlantic Lithium and Piedmont Respond to Short Attack
Wall Street Summary
Stocks fell after jobless claims showed the labor market is still strong, complicating the picture for the Fed's rate path. The $Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC.US)$ lost more than 2%, while the $S&P 500 Index (.SPX.US)$ fell 1.8%.
AU Market Watch
$S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ fell 1.3 per cent at the open on Friday.
The utilities sector was the best performing and rose 0.2 per cent. Within the sector $Origin Energy Ltd (ORG.AU)$ was up 2.2 per cent.
The energy sector fell 0.1 per cent. Worley down 3.8 per cent. $Woodside Energy Group Ltd (WDS.AU)$ fell 1.9 per cent and $Santos Ltd (STO.AU)$ fell 1.5 per cent.
It comes as US banks tumbled overnight due the rate outlook. Concern about February's jobs data also put investors in a decisively defensive mood
Stocks to Watch
$Piedmont Lithium Inc (PLL.AU)$: Nasdaq-listed shares of short seller target Piedmont Lithium closed down 4.7 per cent overnight after it responded to a report by Blue Orca Research.
The report alleges dual ASX and Nasdaq-listed Piedmont's agreement to secure lithium spodumene supply is in jeopardy due to corruption risks in Ghana involving alleged payments to politically connected parties by supplier Atlantic Lithium.
"Piedmont notes that Atlantic has denied the allegations contained in the Short Report and outrightly refutes the allegations of impropriety made by the Short Report. Atlantic’s response to the Short Report has now been released and is available on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange," Piedmont said.
$Bravura Solutions Ltd (BVS.AU)$: Software company Bravura Solution says that acting chief financial officer Harmen Fredrikze has resigned from his position to pursue other opportunities.
He will continue to serve in his role until his departure on June 8. The company says a search for a permanent CFO is currently underway.
$QBE Insurance Group Ltd (QBE.AU)$: Insurance company QBE has announced that non-executive director Eric Smith will be leaving the board after being appointed to a US-based role.
$BHP Group Ltd (BHP.AU)$: Mining giant BHP Group has announced that company secretary John-Paul Santamaria will be stepping from the position, effective immediately.
BHP confirmed that Stefanie Wilkinson remained as group company secretary and Prakash Kakkard as company secretary.
