Nio - Their battery swap stations make no sense. Tesla explored this many years ago in their early days but ditched it for good reason, it's way more expensive to scale then building out an EV charging infrastructure. And Battery-As-A-Service is a terrible idea to, which is why no one else has adopted the strategy. If it weren't for them pursuing these bad strategies then Nio would be a lot more viable IMO.

Rivian - This company simply moves WAY too slow to be successful. It took them 12 years to bring a single vehicle to market.

  • 151685122 : Battery swap stations are an Assett paid for by Tax Deductions.

  • MonkeyGee : yeah,  I agree.  how many swap stations can you have and the platform changes.

  • moo-nlight : Its not excately a bad idea.. depends.. In a metro city, its viable for EV taxi. Look at south China how efficient it is, just like gas topup.

  • b34r : Can Nio cars charge at normal stations as well as swap? Having both options is attractive - being restricted to swap only isn't.

  • strangecloud b34r : Yes, Nio can both charge and swap.

  • The Brown Knight : Battery swap is amazing!!!! 3 min swap vs 45 min charge…. Why do you think so many are negative towards EV??

  • JOHN AVATAR : I love my EV, but I only drive 50 miles a month & there are 100+ L2 chargers near where I live.  A TERRIBLE EV feature is taking HOURS to charge & not being able to find a charger & when you find one it's not working!  EV's will have to take minutes to charge, with working EV chargers at every gas station to compete, until then EV's are not practicle for most people.

  • KillerWhite The Brown Knight : You have to look at the cons as well. In metro city in china there is a long line waiting for battery swap which took about 40mins. the battery you get might not be in good condition as well. The biggest cons is such modular design increase the weight and cost of the whole vehicle significantly, which you are getting less range efficiency and driving responses than a CTC design like BYD or tesla.

  • Macdonell J : NIO engineering team has revolutionized the EV mobility. It has completely decoupled the battery (analogous to the engine in an ICE vehicle) from the vehicle chassis. This means that you can always have the newest, most advanced battery available on the market, in your EV. You will never have range anxiety ever again. You will never have battery degradation issues ever again. Your vehicle will hold its value much longer than non battery swap EV’s and ICE cars, resulting to slower depreciation of the vehicle. At the moment NIO offers 6 free battery swaps per month for new EV users.

NIO has built 1200 Battery Swap Stations and has done over 10 million battery swaps so far. Statistically significant to prove that swapping is not a fluke. Battery Swapping is already in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, and the Netherlands, and will be expanding throughout 25 countries in Europe by 2025.

Not only that, NIO has built a whole ecosystem around battery swapping called BaaS. Battery as a Service. This will bring recurring revenue year in year out just like your Microsoft 365 subscription!

  • The Brown Knight KillerWhite : And there are not long lines waiting for chargers? There is a build out process for anything - battery swap stations or charging stations.
