丰衣足食 : PropNEX (SGX: OYY) investors will be pleased with its massive 402% return over the past three years

The worst outcome is if, after buying a company's stock (assuming no leverage), you lose all of the money you've invested. But when you choose a truly prosperous company, you can reap more than 100% of the benefits. For example, PropNEX Limited (SGX: OYY) shares are 292% higher than they were three years ago. How nice are stock holders! Shareholders are also happy with the 19% increase over the past three months.
So let's evaluate the fundamentals of the past 3 years and see if they're in line with shareholder returns.
Check out our latest analysis of PropNEX
To paraphrase Benjamin Graham's words: In the short term, the market is a voting machine, but in the long run, it's a weighing machine. A flawed but reasonable way to assess how a company's sentiment has changed is to compare earnings per share (EPS) to stock prices.
PropNEX was able to increase its earnings per share at a rate of 46% per year over three years, driving up the stock price. By contrast, the 58% annual increase in stock prices surpassed the increase in earnings per share. This shows that as the business has evolved over the past few years, it has gained the confidence of market participants. It's not unusual for the market to “re-rate” a stock after several years of growth.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the following image (click on the chart to see the exact values).
Earnings per share increased
Earnings per share increased
We think it's positive that insiders have made a lot of purchases over the last year. Having said that, most people see revenue and revenue growth trends as a more meaningful guide to business. It might be worth checking out our free report on PropNEX's earnings, revenue, and cash flow.
What about dividends?
In addition to measuring stock price returns, investors should also consider Total Shareholder Return (TSR). TSR is a rate of return calculation that takes into account the value of cash dividends (assuming any dividends received are reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted financing and divestments. It's fair to say that TSR describes dividend-paying stocks more comprehensively. We noticed that PropNEX's TSR for the past 3 years was 402%, which is superior to the price-earnings ratio described above. Speculation about dividend payments largely explains why the disagreement makes no sense!
A different perspective
It's great to see PropNEX shareholders reaped 27% (total) in the last year. This includes dividends. But a three-year total shareholder return of 71% per year is even better. While it's worth considering the different effects of market conditions on stock prices, there are other more important factors.
