Temasek Holdings released a statement issued by its Chairman today (May 29), stating the findings of an independent review for the investment to FTX, the 3rd largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world before its bankruptcy. In the statement, Chairman Lim Boon Hing expressed disappointment and apologized for the negative impact on Temasek's reputation caused by FTX's fraudulent activities and intentional concealment of information from investors, including Temasek. Nonetheless, Temasek will continue to invest in emerging industries and technology companies as this allows them to understand the impact of these areas on their current portfolio.
Temasek will also strengthen its evaluation process for companies in these fields. Although Temasek's early-stage company investments have been affected, the experience has prompted the company to focus more on profitability. While some of Temasek's investments can benefit from rising interest rates such as banks and commodities, Temasek needs to identify the path to profitability for both existing and new investments.
How would you evaluate Temasek's investment experience and achievements as a whole? Has the investment in FTX impacted your perception of Temasek? What steps do you believe Temasek should take next?

  • ZnWC : I posted an article about Temasek Holding (TH) in Nov last year when FTX collapsed. As mentioned in my post, TH invested in many Singapore companies including DBS and SIA.

Personally I don't think FTX has any impact on TH's reputation as a investment hedge fund - a very small portfolio. Blockchain related investments are still profitable. The only problem is the crypto brokerage and fund are not regulated and there is imminent risk of fraud and bank-run.

Looking forward should TH adopt a more conservative investment methodology like Berkshire Hathaway or explore more lucrative investment but higher risk -  a difficult decision to made. I hope TH will strike a balance and use it's experience and wisdom to make good investment.

What kind of company is Temasek Holdings (TH)?

  • cola1010 : Temasek Holdings has a good overall investment track record, but its investment in FTX and subsequent fraudulent operations underscore the difficulties of investing in emerging industries such as cryptocurrencies. While the impact on perception may vary, Temasek's response, which included conducting an internal assessment, admitting to the problems, and committing to learning from the experience, is encouraging. Temasek should focus on thorough due diligence, strong risk management, transparency, expertise development, continuous learning, and effective communication with investors to better its investing practises. Diversifying the investment portfolio across industries and locations would also be significant. Overall, Temasek's long-term performance and adaptability will determine its future success.

  • GodSpeed289 : Hopefully, the lessons learned from the FTX collapse will likely prompt industry-wide reflection and potential regulatory changes, contributing to a more robust and secure investment environment enhancing investor protections.
