The Singapore Turf Club has announced that Kranji Racecourse will be closed by March 2027, with the last race to be held in October 2024. More than 120 hectares of land will be redeveloped for housing and other uses, marking the end of a proud 182-year horse racing tradition. The decision has profoundly impacted Singapore's equestrian community, with trainers, horse owners, and punters mourning the loss of the much-loved sport.
This comes amidst changes in Singapore's economy, which put more pressure on land use. As Singapore's population grows, more residential developments are needed. Moreover, the betting amount of horse racing betting has been dramatically reduced compared to when it was first established, almost half. However, it also means less land for other industries, including equestrian sports.
Do you think the Singapore government can do more to support the horse racing industry during this transition? How do you think the closure will affect the local equestrian community? Do you have any memories or stories about your local horse-racing club?

  • ZnWC : Horse racing industry can be considered as Gambling or Entertainment. The former is losing interest because national policy don't encourage gambling. As for that latter, there're more exciting entertainment than Horse Racing such as Casino at neighbouring countries and Cruise Ship.

Under the land scarce Singapore, it makes sense to put the (land) resource to more productive used such as building commercial buildings, MNC factories or even residential housings.

The last blow came from the pandemic which forced horse racing to shutdown. This is a wake-up call to entertainment industry (e.g. Theme Park) which can turn obsolete unless it innovates to become attractive to the new generation and tourists.

  • Moomoo SG OP ZnWC : Thanks for your addition and sharing, ZnWC! ![undefined]Useful for other mooers who don't know much about horse racing Haha

  • 102392341 : i haven’t even watch a race before over there. Oops!

  • Jamesim : Goodbye, the racecourse that has accompanied Singapore for 180 years! Another landmark has gone down in history.

The horse ticket really came from a horse
Why is a ten thousand character ticket also called a horse ticket?

In fact, early 10,000 word tickets were really closely related to “horses”; the first, second, and third prizes were won by horses.

Held on Saturday and Sunday in conjunction with Horse Racing Day that year, horse races were held alternately in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, and Penang. No matter where the day's race was hosted, the numbers drawn by the ball were paired with the horses from the last horse race of the day, and the horses that came out in the top three places were the top three. The matching 10,000 word ticket was the first three prizes, and the finalists were all finalists starting with fourth place. Furthermore, the 10 consolation prizes won by shaking the beads had nothing to do with horse racing.

The picture shows Huala Park Racecourse taken in 1910.

The changing times, and economic changes, have replaced horse racing with other forms of entertainment. Plus, animal maintenance and training can cost a lot of money. If the income is lower than the expenses, then there is no way to continue operating. Back then, circuses were actually animal shows, but now they're acting by acrobatic troupes.

Because of its remote location, the neighborhood is not as bustling as the city. I think the local area may be able to use the land for housing, and developing it into a next-generation residential area would be a good investment direction.

  • No_Horse_Run_4896 : Singapore government are sugarcane drink store ownser, they know how to juice out every bit of the land for maximum benefit. [undefined]
Look on the bright side, maybe it will become a better environment when we take bus to Malaysia at Kranji [undefined]
