Breaking News
With rentals soaring in Singapore, more Malaysians working in the Republic are opting to move across the Causeway to Johor Bahru (JB), where there are much cheaper accommodation options.
Jessie Chin and her fiance, who are currently renting a room in a Yishun flat for S$1,200 a month, have decided to head to JB when their tenancy agreement ends. They will move to a fully-furnished, two-bedroom apartment with a built-up area of 850 square feet (sq ft), about 20 kilometres away from Woodlands Checkpoint in Singapore. The rented property will cost them just RM1,700 (S$498) a month.
Household net worth in Singapore grew at a faster pace in the first quarter of 2023, outpacing growth for most of 2022, as rising residential property prices fed into higher values for residential property assets.
And government data showed that, amid the current higher interest rate environment, household liabilities fell in Q1, pointing to households actually cutting back on debt.
Quarterly data on the household sector balance sheet, released by the Department of Statistics Singapore (Singstat) on May 30, showed that household net worth – that is, assets less liabilities – climbed 8.2 per cent year on year to S$2.6 trillion at the end of Q1 2023.
Stocks to Watch
$Singtel (Z74.SG)$: Singtel and SPTel, a joint venture between $ST Engineering (S63.SG)$ and SP Group, have submitted proposals to the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) to build nationwide, interoperable quantum-safe networks for businesses.
At the Asia Tech x Singapore Social event on Tuesday (Jun 6), Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat announced the launch of the National Quantum-Safe Network Plus (NQSN+), which is part of the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI) and IMDA's Digital Connectivity Blueprint.
$Cortina (C41.SG)$: Luxury watch retailer Cortina Holdings was recently subjected to a cybersecurity incident which gave a hacker unauthorised access to one of the group's servers and encrypt its data.
In a bourse filing on Tuesday (Jun 6), the group said that investigations are currently ongoing.
While the group did not indicate when it discovered the intrusion, it said that it took immediate steps after it detected the intrusion, including isolating the affected server.
