$Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.US)$ has announced the coming special AI and data center-centric event on June 13th. The live event is slated to be hosted by CEO Dr. Lisa Su, and will be focusing on AMD’s expanded product portfolio and plans for growing out these market segments.

Given all the hype around generative AI as of late, the Instinct MI300A, an accelerated processing unit (APU) has caught the eyes of the market. AMD has revealed that the chip will deliver an 8x uplift in AI performance and a 5x improvement in performance per watt compared to the MI250X, which underpins the 1.1 exaFLOPS Frontier supercomputer.

From a market standpoint, it has its unique performance and capabilities. $Intel (INTC.US)$'s Falcon Shores XPU was supposed to feature a similar CPU+GPU configuration, but that project was canned in favor of a regular GPU. That leaves $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$'s Grace-Hopper superchip as AMD's chief competitor.

Another highlight is the upcoming EPYC Bergamo CPUs, which will be powered by the new Zen 4C Dense cores. It features 16 Zen 4C Cores Per CCD while featuring 35% Smaller Core Area On 4nm fabricated onTSMC's 4nm process node which can be seen as a slight improvement over the 5nm process node which powers the Zen 4 cores at the moment.

It will handle up to 256 threads and support 12-channel DDR5 memory, PCIe Gen 5.0 functionality, and it will be drop-in compatible with the existing SP5 socket with no software port required because the same Zen 4 ISA is used.

However, AMD won't have the first mover advantage here. The market for cloud-optimized silicon has grown considerably hotter over the past few years, and Bergamo will have to contend with not only Ampere's latest generation of Arm CPUs, but $Intel (INTC.US)$'s own core-optimized parts before long.

This will also compete with $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$’s Grace, which is based entirely on Arm cores, and a slew of other Arm-based chips that are becoming commonplace in large tech data centers.

Overall, AMD's position in the dense cloud market will be solidified with its Zen 4C and future Zen 5C/6C cores which are expected to launch in the coming years.

The June event is shaping up to be a big one, but the biz isn't quite ready to reveal everything.
