AU Evening Wrap: Australia Shares Gain 0.6%, Led by Banks

Australia's $S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ ended 0.6% higher at 7118.2, snapping a four-day losing streak.

Heavyweight financials and materials sectors provided a boost, rising 0.7% and 1.2% respectively.

Still, technology and telecom services stocks proved to be a drag falling 0.4% and 0.7%, respectively.

$Collins Foods Ltd (CKF.AU)$ was the best performer, rising almost 18% after announcing plans to build as many as 12 KFC Australia stores in FY 2024.

The major banks-- $ANZ Group Holdings Ltd (ANZ.AU)$, $CommBank (CBA.AU)$, $National Australia Bank Ltd (NAB.AU)$ and $Westpac Banking Corp (WBC.AU)$--rose between 0.5% and 1.6%.

Private health insurer $NIB Holdings Ltd (NHF.AU)$ fell 1.5%, while rival $Medibank Pvt Ltd (MPL.AU)$ lost 3.9% after the prudential regulator said it would impose extra capital requirements on it in the wake of its cyberattack.

$Qantas Airways Ltd (QAN.AU)$ fell 1.0%, despite saying that domestic capacity was back to pre-Covid levels.
