AU Evening Wrap: ASX Closes 0.3% Higher as Consumer Stocks Rally

The Australian sharemarket finished the session higher, buoyed by optimism on Wall Street that extended into Asia.
The $S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ closed up 20.3 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 7223.6 as nine out of the 11 sectors finished higher on the session.
Trading was also affected by a seasonal trade, where on the first day of new financial year investors buy last year's losers and sell the winners.
Consumer discretionary led the ASX higher, climbing 1.4 per cent as investors continued to pile into the stocks that have sent the sector up for a fifth consecutive session.
$Super Retail Group Ltd (SUL.AU)$ closed was up 33.4 per cent and $JB Hi Fi Ltd (JBH.AU)$ added 2.5 per cent. $Eagers Automotive Ltd (APE.AU)$ gained 2.5 per cent as it upped its stake in BYD retail JV for $70 million.
Technology stocks fell as investors took profits after a recent gains. $WiseTech Global Ltd (WTC.AU)$ tumbled 2.9 per cent and $Technology One Ltd (TNE.AU)$ shed 2.2 per cent.
$United Malt Group Ltd (UMG.AU)$ was the best performer, climbing 8.6 per cent after Malteries Soufflet signed binding deal to buy the company at $5 a share
$Downer EDI Ltd (DOW.AU)$ shares added 2.7 per cent following reports it sealed a $540 million contract to maintain roads for Hamilton City Council in New Zealand.
Winemaker $Australian Vintage Ltd (AVG.AU)$ surged 10 per cent following news that it hired E&P to run a strategic review of its $100 million business as it battles tough times in the wine market.
