Tesla Malaysia Launch on 20th July!
$Tesla (TSLA.US)$ has started a new Instagram account for its Malaysian counterpart (@teslamotorsmys). Furthermore, they have also confirmed to make its official debut in Malaysia on July 20, 2023.
Note: As of the writing of this post, the Instagram account was deactivated for some reason.
Tesla first hinted at its Malaysia launch in March 2023 when Tengku Zafrul (MITI Minister) unveiled the BEV Global Leaders initiative. Tesla Motors was announced as the initiative's first approved candidate, providing the company with an exemption from the usual AP rules and enabling it to sell its cars in Malaysia.
As a prerequisite of the BEV Global Leaders initiative, Tesla Malaysia is obligated to establish a minimum of 50 DC fast charging stations with a minimum charging power of 180 kW. At least 30% (15 stations) of these charging stations must be publicly accessible, thereby enabling usage by electric vehicles from other brands.
By May 2023, certain Tesla components were registered with SIRIM, and in June 2023, Tesla Malaysia conducted its inaugural walk-in recruitment day. The event attracted a massive turnout of over 6,000 applicants, who queued for sales and service roles.
It is predicted that Tesla Malaysia will introduce the Model 3 and Model Y, which aligns with the company's offerings in other ASEAN markets. These are essentially the only Tesla models available in right-hand drive. The latest iterations of the Model S and Model X are exclusive to left-hand drive.
