Microsoft Wins the Case to Takeover Activision Blizzard!
$Microsoft (MSFT.US)$has received a court's green light to proceed with its $69 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard Inc. The decision trumps an attempt by the US Federal Trade Commission to stop what is considered the biggest-ever deal in gaming history. The judge approved the merger which could conclude before a July 18 deadline, except in the UK where the deal was blocked in May.
Microsoft aims to enhance its mobile gaming offerings through the acquisition of Activision, the owner of Candy Crush developer, King. The merger could push Microsoft to third place globally amongst video game companies, only behind China's Tencent Holdings Ltd., and console competitor Sony Corp.
The FTC has voiced its disappointment, stating the merger could potentially undermine competition in areas such as cloud gaming, subscription services, and consoles. It plans to announce further steps to preserve competition and protect consumers.
The acquisition of Activision is expected to significantly boost Microsoft's mobile gaming capabilities, given Activision Blizzard's successful titles like Candy Crush and Call of Duty Mobile. Still, some critics worry that Microsoft might use this increased influence to limit access to its popular games or publish more exclusives for Xbox and PC, to the disadvantage of competitors like Sony.
