The $S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ finished up 1.6 per cent or 111.2 points to 7246.9 points for its third straight day of gains.

Among the gold majors $Newcrest Mining Ltd (NCM.AU)$ jumped 3.7 per cent, with $Northern Star Resources Ltd (NST.AU)$ adding 4.3 per cent.

The real estate sector also gained as investors trimmed expectations around the pace of interest rate increases. Westfield-owner $Scentre Group (SCG.AU)$ advanced 3.4 per cent, with $Goodman Group (GMG.AU)$ jumping 4.1 per cent.

$Alliance Aviation Services Ltd (AQZ.AU)$ also jumped 13.7 per cent after it upgraded profit guidance.

In the afternoon US equity futures pointed higher, with the gold price fetching around $US1963 an ounce.
