Australian shares were swept up in the volatility that struck Asian markets on Friday afternoon after the Bank of Japan said it would take a more flexible approach to managing its yield curve control policy.
The $S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ dropped 0.7 per cent, or 52.3 points, to 7403.6 on Friday, but the benchmark still managed to post a weekly gain of 1.2 per cent.
The big four finished mostly lower; $CommBank (CBA.AU)$ fell 1 per cent to $105.50, $Westpac Banking Corp (WBC.AU)$ dropped 0.3 per cent to $22.28, $ANZ Group Holdings Ltd (ANZ.AU)$ tumbled 0.1 per cent to $25.76 and $National Australia Bank Ltd (NAB.AU)$ eased 0.3 per cent to $28.38.
Iron ore traded in Singapore fell 2.9 per cent to $106.50 a tonne on the September futures contract, reversing some of the gains from earlier this week that were triggered by hopes of stimulus in China.
$Fortescue Ltd (FMG.AU)$ dropped 5.4 per cent to $21.68 a day after releasing a quarterly production update, while $Rio Tinto Ltd (RIO.AU)$ declined 1 per cent to $116.62 and $BHP Group Ltd (BHP.AU)$ tumbled 0.8 per cent to $45.80.
Gold miners were also among the biggest laggards as a stronger US dollar weighed on the price of the precious metal; $Regis Resources Ltd (RRL.AU)$ declined 8.3 per cent to $1.71 and $West African Resources Ltd (WAF.AU)$ fell 5.3 per cent to 89¢.
